Driving rhythms, check. Sparkling harp-and-requinto interplay, check. Trademark
sibling vocals, check. But on their 3rd album – with the traditional “El
Ahualulco” in accordion-driven Colombian vallenato style, the
crackling Afro-Cuban montuno of “Fandanguito de los Muertos” and
a Latin Americanized version of Procol Harum’s “Conquistador” with
cuatro, guitars, organ and flutes – Conjunto Jardín breaks fertile
new ground as they continue expanding the borders of son jarocho.

Conjunto Jardín’s Gary Johnson returned to his roots for this reunion
concert of his mid-’70s Norman, Oklahoma band that honored its fallen lead
singer. With noted singer-songwriter Kevin Welch, drummer Mike McCarty and bassist
Steve Grunder, this live recording distills the spirit – not only rootsy
and rockin’ but yearning and poignant
– of Blue Rose Café’s unique brand
of progressive country-rock that was a precursor
to today’s alt-country and Americana genres. |
