Born in Dakar,
Senegal, Marcel moved to Porto-Novo, Benin, at age 11, where
he studied music and traditional drumming in secondary school.
Moving first to Abidjan, Ivory Coast, he later continued to
Paris in 1978, where he performed and recorded with Manu Dibango,
Mory Kante, Tshala Mwana and others before moving to Washington
DC in 1988. While living there he taught traditional African
drumming workshops in the DC and Charlotte, NC school systems
and toured with Aster Aweke and Mbilia Bel. Marcel joined
Libby and Gary's previous group, Word of Mouth, virtually
upon his arrival in L.A. in 1990; he has also played with
other world music groups including Bateke Beat (Central African)
and Faramaz Assef (Persian).
